MILF consultations on peace process start

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has started conducting consultations on the peace process in Mindanao to update its followers regarding the possible resumption of peace negotiations with the government.

MILF political committees under political affairs chairman Ghazali Jaafar started the consultations August 1 and will last until August 12.

“The purpose of this meeting is to provide updates on the recent developments on the peace processes between the government and MILF, particularly on the four issues reached by the government and MILF during the special meeting of the two parties’ peace negotiating panels in Malaysia last July 28-29, 2009,” the MILF said on its Website.

Suspect in slay of former Quezon town mayor falls

Police operatives arrested Sunday one of two suspects in the killing of a former town mayor in Quezon province, authorities said Monday.

A report to Calabarzon Police Regional head Chief Superintendent Perfecto Palad said that Adorico De Sagun Ebora, 38, a resident of barangay Libato in San Juan town in Batangas, was arrested in barangay Sampaga in Batangas City last August 2 by Task Force Emralino.

5-year-old kidnap victim released in Basilan

Kidnappers on Saturday night released its five-year-old victim in Basilan province after holding him captive for almost a week, a military spokesman said on Sunday.

Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo said Aris dela Cruz was released due to “unrelenting pursuit operations” and not because of ransom payment.

He said the boy was recovered by civilian volunteers at about 7:35 p.m. at the vicinity of Sitio Katamilan in Barangay Serongon in Mohamad Adjul town.

‘Dante’ death toll now 10; 15 still missing in Bicol

MANILA, Philippines - The death toll from tropical storm “Dante” rose to 10 and may still increase as at least 15 others were reported missing as of Saturday night, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said.

In its situation report at 6 p.m. Saturday, the NDCC said nine of the fatalities were from the Bico regionl while one was from Southern Luzon. Eight of the 10 were identified as:
