Awash with cash, Makati rolls out first laptops-for-teachers program

Unlike their peers in other parts of the country, public school teachers in Makati, the country’s financial capital, seem to enjoy relative economic support. That was demonstrated late last year when the wealthy city subsidized the purchase of laptops for its public school teachers.

A “starting fund” of P20 million was used to acquire high-powered business laptops from HP and passed on to teachers at a 40 percent discount through a loan scheme that should be paid in three years at zero interest.

As the government cannot directly lend to private individuals, the laptops were coursed through Macemco (Makati City Employees Multi-purpose Cooperative), which will be coordinating with Schools Division of Makati headed by Superintendent Elena Ruiz.
