Facebook changes angered online community

It was Wednesday when the world’s largest social network, Facebook underwent changes.  Then a few hours after that, raging online users started complaining and posted sentiments in their status bars and Twitter. Some of which were a fan page named “Petition against the new Facebook homepage” and a “#NewFacebook” hashtag over twitter. But Facebook users are known for complaining fiercely about changes to the service but then adapting and sticking with the online community later on.

Some online users even stated that Facebook’s changes was a move to level the competition with Google+ and Twitter.

Among Facebook’s changes are the following:
a. New “News Feed” that streams updates from friends now gives priority to important posts
b. Larger Images for photos shared in the website
c. A “Ticker” chat column was added for real-time conversations. It also allows people to engage in text chats focused on freshly uploaded images or other posts.

In the past weeks, Facebook’s strategy was to  focus on its members’ sharing control with what information and to whom it will be shared. The first act of Facebook on this new focus was a Twitter-style feed with the  addition of “Subscribe” buttons that let people hear from people who aren’t friends at the network, and share insights with strangers. Facebook also gave control to its members the option to select what kinds of updates from friends make it into their personal news feeds.

Other speculation about the upcoming Facebook changes are the launch of a platform for online music services such as Rdio and Spotify and also stories from professional news outfits.

Skype feature in Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg revealed the new feature of Facebook, the most popular social networking site on earth, in cooperation with Skype, the instant messaging and voice chat provider. He showed the new feature during an event in the headquarter of Facebook in Palo Alto.

“We think this is awesome because we’re using the best technology that’s out there for doing video chat with the best social infrastructure that’s out there,” said Mark Zuckerberg.

The new Skype feature comes with enhanced group text chat which allows for multi-person interactions and a camera icon that can be clicked on for instant one-on-one video calls with friends.

Is this the response of Facebook with the Google+ Hangout feature? Maybe, Mark Zuckerberg was threatening with the Google+ that was launched just last week. However, he said that it was planned to add Skype feature way before Google launches its social networking site and Microsoft plans to buy the Skype.

“There is this clear arc where the world generally believes (social networking) is going to be everywhere,” Zuckerberg said. “In a matter of time it will be billions, whether it is us or somebody else doing it.”

Microsoft bought Skype for $8.5 billion!

Yesterday’s announcement from CNN that Microsoft has bought Skype for $8.5 billion. It is a huge business news for Skype’s 600 million users. What could be the purchase mean and benefit for the users’ experience?

For other people who doesn’t use Skype but have Microsoft computers, phone, video games will definitely see some changes in their system.

A mixed reactions for users has been professes through their Twitter accounts wondering what could Microsoft to with Skype. Here are the 5 of the leading speculations:

  1. Integrate it with the Xbox
Roughly 10 million Microsoft users already have cameras attached to their devices. That’s the number of Xbox Kinect systems sold since the motion-sensing game system was released last year.
It seems like a no-brainer that Microsoft would integrate Skype’s advanced chat technologies with that, as well as with its Xbox LIVE service.
The Xbox 360 already has a chat function. But gamers have largely been unimpressed, opting for other consoles like the PlayStation for multi-player games that require real-time communication.
Similarly, Skype already has TV-compatible webcams and software, but it’s hardly been a high-profile feature. Putting Skype on the Xbox could push both products forward.
  2. Improve the Windows Phone
Let’s be honest: Windows Mobile phones aren’t selling like the iPhone or the growing cascade of phones running Google’s Android system.
The Windows Phone 7 system really hasn’t had an answer for the iPhone’s FaceTime app or Google Talk’s newly added video. Now it will, with the best-in-breed video and voice chat app at its disposal.
  3. Show up at your office meeting
One of the reasons Microsoft was considered to be high on Skype was so Google and Cisco Systems, both rumored to be interested, wouldn’t get their hands on it.
In terms of workplace communication, the latter may be more important than the former. Cisco is the first name people think of when office video conferencing and teleconferencing are mentioned.
But Microsoft has made inroads with its Lync system, and adding Skype’s software would move it one step further.
Oh yeah … and it just so happens that Skype CEO Tony Bates is a former Cisco executive, as are other members of the Skype team.
Microsoft’s Office 365, which will include an online-only option, is expected to be released later this year. The suite of workplace tools will include Lync.
  4. Appear on Facebook
Yes, Facebook was rumored to be one of the tech titans in the running to buy Skype. The social media giant’s interest seems a clear indication that Mark Zuckerberg and Co. would like to beef up Facebook Chat with video.
It was just a passing reference. But on Tuesday, Ballmer mentioned “social” as one of the possible uses for a Microsoft-owned Skype.
Microsoft actually owns a piece of Facebook, having bought in for $240 million in 2007. And the two have worked together on projects since then. (Skype now also lets users integrate their news feeds and friends lists.)
Getting a product in front of Facebook’s 600 million or so users would be huge.
  5. Bring some juice back to Hotmail
By virtue of its ties to Microsoft, Hotmail still has tons of users worldwide. But do you know anybody who’s excited about it?
For the past year or two, Microsoft has been punching up Hotmail, an e-mail service that has lost considerable cool points in the wake of Gmail’s rise.

Pinoy Quits Facebook

MANILA, Philippines – Days ago, creative web technologist Joseph Dee and systems designer Matthew Milan of Toronto, Canada asked Facebook users to dump the social networking service, citing privacy concerns.

They created a website, which declared May 31 as “Quit Facebook Day” and provided alternatives to the popular social networking site, such as Twitter or Flickr.

“If you agree that Facebook doesn’t respect you, your personal data or the future of the web, you may want to join us,” the website read.

Some Pinoys won’t give up Facebook

In the Philippines, it seems that Facebook is also a hard habit to break.

Abs-cbnNEWS.com posted the question “Would issues about Facebook’s privacy policies make you quit Facebook?” in its official Facebook page on Monday morning, and to date, only 3 members (out of more than 20 users who gave their comments) said “yes.”

Most of them said it’s the Facebook user’s responsibility to be careful about what they post, and to hide things that they don’t want other people to see.

“No, the problem here is not Facebook. People should really pore over and go around to learn more about the privacy settings, madali lang naman (it’s just easy),” said Famela Bayawa.

“No, because I do believe if you’re wise enough, no matter how tight the security of Facebook is, you would not put important or very sensitive items in your account,” added Danilo Cruz.

George W. Bush joins Facebook, Mixed reactions on some users

US president George W. Bush  is apparently the latest world leader to do social networking, by joining the continually online community of Facebook, but has left many people wanting more personal interaction and opinions.

The profile George W. Bush was created on Facebook around 9:30pm yesterday. Some say that the profile is not valid but fake, nevertheless it almost had 58,000 likes and still growing within the first 15 hours of its existence.

These are some posts and comments:

“Although I couldn’t disagree more with your ideology and I think your presidency did great damage to this country, I have to commend you for being so respectfully silent once you left office, as is customary,” wrote Facebook user Janet Burke.

“Sir, although I disagreed with some of your decisions, I want you to know that I understand you had a lot on your plate,” commented Terry Smith.

Some other world readers who only recently began to utilize social media include Bill Gates and the Dalai Lama, they both joined Twitter last year.

African- American Spiderman?

Comedian and actor Donald Glover has started a viral campaign to get him an audition for the role of Peter Parker in the new Spider-Man film. Glover has taken to the social marketing streets and is already seeing a lot of support. Get the details after the break.

The actor started the campaign yesterday after someone on Twitter let him know about an io9 article that suggested races other than “white” should be considered for the confirmed reboot to the wildly successful franchise. The comments were flooded with nominations for Glover. He apparently loves the character, and just wants an audition, as he mentions in a recent tweet.

Some people are mistaken. I don’t want to just be given the role. I want to be able to audition. I truly love Spider-Man.

Speaking of Twitter, Glover is using the hashtag tool to rally up support and create a trending topic, using “#donald4spiderman”. A Facebook group has even been created by one fan, and it already has over two thousand members. Check out the page for some great edited Spiderman photos that range from believable to hilarious. Personally, I find Glover hilarious and fun to watch, but it’s hard for me to see him in that role. What do you think?

Facebook told to set up warning system after new sex scam

SINGAPORE–A major computer security firm urged Facebook on Tuesday to set up an early-warning system after hundreds of thousands of users were hit by a new wave of fake sex-video attacks.

British-based virus fighter Sophos warned users of the world’s biggest social networking site to be on guard against any posting entitled “distracting beach babes”, which contains a movie thumbnail of a bikini-clad woman.

In a press statement, Sophos said the malicious posts appear as if they are coming from Facebook users’ friends, but it urged recipients not to click on the thumbnail.

By clicking on it, users are taken to a rogue Facebook application informing them that they do not have the right player software installed, Sophos said.

It tricks users into installing adware, a software package that automatically plays, displays or downloads advertisements to their computer, and the video link is spread further across the network.

Sophos said that “hundreds of thousands” of Facebook users were believed to have received the posts over the past weekend.

It followed a similar scam that spread on Facebook the week before involving a fake posting tagged as the “sexiest video ever”.

“It’s time for Facebook to set up an early warning system on their network, through which they can warn their almost 500 million users about breaking threats as they happen,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.

“A simple message appearing on all users’ screens warning them of the outbreak would have helped in halting the attack,” he said.

“Unless something is done, it won’t be surprising if there is another widespread attack this coming weekend, affecting thousands more users.”

The social networking site is already under fire for revealing users’ information too freely on the Internet.

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said Monday that the website “missed the mark” with its complex privacy controls and would reveal simpler features in the coming weeks.
