Lacson links Estrada to illegal gambling

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) Senator Panfilo Lacson has linked former president Joseph Estrada to “jueteng” and smuggling.

Lacson, whom Estrada appointed Philippine National Police chief, made the disclosure Monday in a privilege speech at the Senate.

Lacson said that he parried efforts by the camp of Estrada to persuade him to postpone his privilege speech about the darker side of the former leader as a government official.

A few minutes before he delivered his speech, Lacson told reporters that the Estrada camp was trying to work on him up until Sunday night.

‘Cory’ refuses treatment

Prayers pour in from friends, political foes
Former Philippine President Corazon “Cory” Aquino has refused further chemotherapy or any other medical treatment in her battle against colon cancer, her spokesman said in comments published Thursday.
The 76-year-old Aquino, who led the Philippines from 1986 to 1992 after the fall of Ferdinand Marcos, was admitted to a Manila hospital last week, and is reportedly being fed intravenously.

Estrada: De Castro toughest rival in 2010

Claims VP, like him, has most ‘masa’ following.

MANILA, Philippines—Joseph Estrada sees a battle royal between himself and Vice President Noli de Castro if they both make a pitch for No. 1 in the 2010 presidential election.

Estrada Tuesday told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that only De Castro could rival him when it came to winning the support of the Filipino poor, who, he claimed, “comprise 80-90 percent of the voters.”

Estrada: I can run again for president

Says plan backed by ‘legal study’.

MANILA, Philippines—Saying the people, not the courts, are the “final arbiter” on whether he could run again for president, Joseph Estrada has come out brandishing a “legal study” supporting his view that voters may send him back to Malacañang.

Quoting the study, the deposed leader maintained that the constitutional ban on the reelection of chief executives applied to “sitting presidents” and not to a former president like him who wasn’t even able to finish his term.
