Prisoners of tragedy decry comfy lives of Ampatuans

He was seen sneering on two occasions when he left his detention cell to attend hearings in Manila. His seemingly relaxed behavior was the mien of a guilt-free person who could soundly sleep at night. But in the homes of families who believe that Andal Ampatuan Jr. was behind the slaughter of 57 people in Maguindanao, being at peace has become an unusual disposition.

Mahirap makatulog…Kahit na nasa kulungan na sila, masarap pa rin ang buhay nila, mas mahirap pa ang buhay naming nasa labas. (It’s hard to sleep….Even if they are already in detention, their lives are still better than those of us who are outside),” said Noemi Parcon, wife of Pronteira Balita publisher Joel Parcon, one of the 31 media workers who were massacred in Maguindanao’s Ampatuan town.

2 on trial for Pinoy detainee’s accidental death in UAE

MANILA, Philippines — Two inmates of a detention center in the United Arab Emirates are on trial for the death of their asthmatic Filipino fellow inmate last February, an online news site has reported.

The Khaleej Times said the two who stood trial included a 19-year-old Yemeni and a 20-year-old “stateless” man.

Elderly Filipino couple battered to death in US

An elderly Filipino couple was found dead inside their home in Rockford, Illinois, Wednesday night.

The Winnebago county coroner’s office said 77-year-old Reynato Cardino and his 74-year-old wife Leticia died of blunt force trauma, indicating that they were battered to death.

The couple was found dead inside their Pleasant View Avenue home in Rockford a few days after returning from their vacation in Zamboanga, Philippines.

Gov’t, religious, other leaders condole with Estrada family

Government officials led by Vice President Noli de Castro and Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita as well as heads of religious and business groups came together to condole with the family of former President Joseph Estrada and to pay their respects to his mother, Doña Mary, who passed away Wednesday at the age of 103.

Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile arrived some two hours after De Castro Wednesday.

De Castro and El Shaddai’s Bro. Mike Velarde joined in the concelebrated mass for Doña Mary led by Bishops Teodoro Bacani and Camilo Gregorio and Msgr. Albert Venus.

De Castro and Bro. Mike and several old and loyal friends of Estrada stayed with him until late into the night.
