COMMENTARY: How It’s Showtime can improve its noontime fare

Last Monday, February 6, was the pilot episode of It’s Showtime, ABS-CBN’s new noontime show. It is hosted by Anne Curtis, Vice Ganda, Vhong Navarro, Karylle and Billy Crawford, Teddy Corpuz, and Kim Atienza.

Did it live up to the expectations?

The answer is, not yet.

It’s Showtime is a reformat of Showtime, the Kapamilya channel’s highly-popular talent show that previously aired before noontime. With It’s Showtime, the old show seems to be leaving behind its previous image as a home for incredible talent so it could be a full-fledged noontime show.

To convert Showtime into a noontime show, the producers added new segments to lengthen the running time namely Sine Mo ‘To, The Singing V, Pitik Bulag, Arte Mo!, and Rock Clock.

Some of the guests during the pilot episode were Erik Santos, Jovit Baldivino, Bugoy Drilon, Marcelito Pomoy, Ejay Falcon, Empress Schuck, and Gab Valenciano. Entertaining the crowd were bands Sponge Cola, Itchyworms, Rocksteddy, andShowtime Season 1 grand champion XB Gensan and child wonder Bugoy Cariño.

The last segment, Classic Showtime, is the talent search portion but condensed.Showtime is known to discover incredible talent, so it’s surprising to see that the new show relegated its strongest segment at the end.

There seems to no proper buildup since they put the new segments that weren’t quite strong enough to build up energy for the climax, which is Classic Showtime.

The first segment, Sine Mo ‘To, was a live sketch that recalled Lunch-A-Funny-Tym. Select members from the “madlang pipol” were tasked to do comical skits with the hosts and Vice Ganda will comment on their performances. They must follow what does the narrators Vhong Navarro and Billy Crawford will say. While hilarious and admirable for heightening audience participation, it should be shortened to avoid being dragging.

The Singing V, meanwhile, can be considered a mini spin-off of the previous showThe Singing Bee.

It took two of the show’s gaps, although it was not exciting enough to warrant that length. The rules were also confusing, because they were not explained well before the game started.

Pitik Bulag also had confusing rules and too much length–seven minutes were spent introducing the contestants and the game mechanics before any game was played.

Arte Mo! and Rock Clock are It’s Showtime‘s main prize-giving segments. With a little tweaking, these could be as big as the classics, like Laban o Bawi, or Pera o Bayong.

One good thing about It’s Showtime‘s is that the rapport of the hosts is still there. At times, the camaraderie between Vice Ganda, Anne Curtis, Vhong Navarro, Karylle, Billy Crawford, and Kuya Kim is genuine enough to bring excitement to the show. The other hosts need improvement.

Since it was just the pilot episode, it is expected that It’s Showtime would hit snags. So how can it be improved? Here are some suggestions:

1. Make Classic Showtime the show’s centerpiece, instead of relegating it to the end. Open the show with the introduction of all the acts for the day, then show a game in the next gap. In the following gap, show the first act’s performance. Then another game, another act, etc. End the show with the announcement of the winner.

2. Cut the segments that do not work.

3. To avoid confusion of the rules, record a short VTR of these rules and show them before any game is played.

4. Let the other hosts, particularly the new ones, hold the mike. Do not overexpose the main hosts by giving them all the juicy segments.

5. Do not focus on the competition. The producers of It’s Showtime should focus on giving the show its own identity first. The new format looks like it was made to go head-to-head with Eat Bulaga!

A successful noontime show should have an emotional connection for it to have an impact and eventually, become a part of the noontime habit of Filipinos.

It will be recalled that ‘Sang Linggo n’APO Sila, led by the APO Hiking Society (Danny Javier, Jim Paredes and Buboy Garovillo), offered a balance of performances and entertainment, ensuring its longevity of three years.

The hosts of Magandang Tanghali Bayan (Randy Santiago, John Estrada, Willie Revillame, Christine Jacob, Roderick Paulate and Amy Perez) had undeniable rapport, which enabled the show to make the rivalry with GMA-7′s Eat Bulaga! more intense. It underwent several reformats to Masayang Tanghali Bayan and MTB Ang Saya Saya to offer fresh content to viewers.

Wowowee had Willie Revillame as the main magnet and by focusing on sob stories, the show was able to appeal to the aspirations of the masa.

It’s Showtime should focus on developing its own personality. Does it want to attract viewers for its prizes or does it want to discover new talents? Classic Showtime has proven to be a big hit, especially since the hosts had the ability to set trends simply by introducing new words such as “unkabogable,” “havey” and “waley.” The show also contributed to popular culture when Vice Ganda popularized jokes that start with “may nag-text!”

It’s Showtime attempts to be a hybrid of a variety show and a talent search competition. Will this format work? It’s a matter of creating the perfect mix that viewers will find palatable for their noontime fare.

Sandara Park says hello to old colleagues at ABS-CBN

On her last day in Manila, Korean pop star Sandara Park visited former colleagues at ABS-CBN. While her groupmates from 2NE1–CL, Bom and Minzy–opted to stay at their hotel to rest before their flight back to Korea, Sandara decided to drop by to say hello to her former Star Magic mentor Mr. Johnny Manahan, the staff of Sunday noontime show ASAP (where she was a regular) and some celebrity friends. Sandara had just returned from Albay that morning with the rest of 2NE1.

Because of time restraints, Sandara had to rush to different areas of the Kapamilya network starting with a visit to Mr. M, who was at the time directing ASAP’s live show from the control booth. The two had a short chat and she soon went to see the show’s staff including Joyce Liquicia, ASAP’s business unit head. She then headed off to the MYX studio to meet Luis Manzano, the former Star Circle Quest (SCQ) host but she eventually went back to the ASAP dressing rooms to see him. Here, she was also able to talk Kim Chiu, who is an admitted fan of Sandara.

Afterwards, Sandara headed straight to a nearby restaurant have her favorite sisig, sinigang na hipon, pakbet, gambas, and kinilaw na pusit for lunch. Here, she got to hang out with actor Joross Gamboa, one of her closest buddies from SCQ.

Sandara also decided to buy Italian food for the 2NE1 members and their entourage and here, another former SCQ member, Raphael Martinez ,caught up with them. On her way back to her hotel, Joross called actress Melissa Ricks, who was on a Walang Hanggan mall tour in Lucena, and had her talk to Sandara. Melissa thanked Sandara for the belated birthday gift the latter had sent her days earlier. Melissa was particularly touched that Sandara remembered to get what she really wanted.

It was a short trip to her “second home” and Sandara hopes she will have more time to spend with her friends the next time she visits again.

John Lloyd Talks About his Movie and Love life

John Lloyd’s new movie with Angel Locsin, “Unofficially Yours”, becomes the most talked about Valentine movie of Star Cinema because of its story and concept about sexual relationship nowadays. John Lloyd admitted that the pressure is different this time, as how his new movie tackled a different kind of issue about relationship.

“Medyo kakaiba yung tema. Kakaiba para sa Star (Cinema) pero yung tema naman na yun familiar naman na yung audience sa ngayon. Saka kasi dati ‘di ba isang klase siya ng subject na hindi pinag-uusapan pero laganap ‘di ba so finally matatackle sa isang pelikula. So I’m very excited na maikwento natin ito sa paraan na kung paano gumagawa ng pelikula ang Star Cinema.”

Speaking of relationship, there are rumors that Shaina and him got back together. John Lloyd confirmed the issue, and it has been a long time since they reunited.

“Nagkahiwalay kami, nagkabalikan. And now, we’re doing perfectly fine.

“We are trying to keep the private matters private kasi masyado din ata kaming naging maluwag din sa pagwe-welcome ng public sa buhay namin. Kaya siguro ngayon mas may effort lang at consciousness lang to keep the matter private as much as possible,” John Lloyd said in an interview.

“Unofficially Yours” will hit the big screen this coming February 15.

It’s official! “Its Showtime” will replace HYY

It is now official that what John Estrada said on HYY was true, Showtime will only be gone for 1 week, and this time- “Its Showtime”( formerly Showtime) will replace HYY on the noontime slot.

Madlang pipol will no longer be sad, surely won’t have a reason to miss their favorite show.

Is it totally a “Farewell” to Showtime?

Many were shocked by seemed to be the “last” show of Showtime last Saturday, January 28.

Showtime has been airing for more than two years and has been a replacement for some time as a noontime show of Abs-Cbn. For their last episode, videos of their former grand champions, dancers, “madlang pipol” and their celebrity guests, thanking Showtime and telling their experiences with the show, were shown before commercials. There were also performances by their former “Hurados” like Jed Madela, Vina Morales, Robert Sena, Juris Fernandez, Nyoy Volante, Yeng Constantino, Jet Pangan, Sitti, and Yael Yuzon and a dance number from Iya Villania, Ryan Bang, and Jhong Hilario.

The hosts expressed their deepest gratitude to the “madlang pipol”, the staff and with their co-hosts.  Each has their messages with their co-hosts. Everyone was emotional with their messages to each other.

But everyone was confused about what Hapee Yippe Yehey host’s said, “Buti pa sila isang linggo lang di magkikita,”John Estrada said. “Buti sila isang linggo natin ‘di makikita. Tayo? ‘Di na makikita,” Randy answered while laughing. So we can say that their farewell is only temporary for Showtime. For the meantime, Showtime will be replaced by “Kapamilya Blockbuster”, followed by “Mundo Man ay Magunaw”, both will start on Monday, January 30.

KC Concepcion on Rouge Magazine Cover

A different KC Concepcion will be seen on the new cover of Rouge Magazine Jan-Feb issue. KC wearing white high-cut, one piece swimsuit- flaunting her butt to the camera, with her pet python coiled around her wrist and her hand holding the hair of a man’s bust. It seems like KC is not heartbroken at all, the fact that the photo shoot was taken during her break-up with Piolo Pascual.

KC said that a different side of her will be read on the magazine, revealing that her feelings and emotions were her inspiration for the pictorial.

“Sa lahat ng naging mistakes ko, parang sinakyan nila lahat. Ni-ride nila ‘yung journey ko. ‘Yung alon na ‘yon, parang sila ‘yung kasabay kong sumakay sa alon na ‘yon. “Tuloy-tuloy lang naman ‘yung buhay, ‘di ba? So with every mistake naman, you change hopefully for the better. You just try to be the best person you can be,” KC said in “TV Patrol” interview.

KC is overwhelmed with the positive comments she’s receiving for her magazine cover. She thanked, “Rogue team and, of course, my beloved Mark Nicdao (photographer), Celeste Tuviera (hair stylist), Pam Quinones (stylist) and Juan Sarte (make-up artist) for being a part of my journey.”
