Solon proposes changing “EDSA” to “Cory Aquino Avenue”

In honor of the late president and the “icon” of democracy in the Philippines, a Filipino lawmaker suggested renaming the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) to Cory Aquino Avenue.

“It would be but a fitting tribute to former President Corazon Aquino, woman of courage and valor, that EDSA, an avenue that became testament to the country’s love of democracy, be named after her,” said Bohol Representative Rene Relampagos.

The late president Cory Aquino is connected with the history of EDSA as the venue of the 1986 People Power Revolution that ousted Former President Ferdinand Marcos and made Aquino president.

EDSA is one of the main roads in Metro Manila stretching 54 kilometers. Before it was renamed after the Filipino Historian, Epifanio de los Santos in 1959 through Republic Act 2140, EDSA was known as Highway 54.

However, the news was not welcomed by netizens in the country. Others expressed their frustrations on the lack of focus of Filipino lawmakers on more important matters such as government budget and developmental laws. While others expressed their sentiments on why the government is focusing on lighter issues on renaming EDSA wherein the issue of heavy traffic is much more important and timely.

Queenie Padilla quits showbiz, embraces Islam

Queenie Padilla, the daughter of action star Robin Padilla and Liezl Sicangco (a natural born Islam) has officially announced that she will leave show business for good and live her life based on the teachings of Islam.

Padilla’s conversion came after her mother’s appeal last March that her daughters Kylie and Queenie to return to the Muslim faith.

“When I was in showbiz, I was very unhappy. I was lost and I always felt I never belong[ed]. But now that Allah is in my life, Alhamdullilah, La illa illalah, I am so happy and content in my life,” Padilla said.

Queenie recently went to Makkah in Saudi Arabia to perform her religious duty called Hajj. She added that she found “inner peace” and “direction” by going back to Islam where she also found her happiness.

“Islam is a way of life. When you start to [become a] Muslim, you know [what] your life purpose really is. I am such a sinful person, but Allah invited me to his house. I am so close to him,” she said.

Padilla also expressed that being a female celebrity is considered as Haraam in the Islam religion (term used in referral to anything that is prohibited by Allah) because women need to show “everything” to gain viewer’s interest, which in contrary to Islam teaching of women being conservative and modest.

Padilla also thanked her father for introducing her to the religion of Islam.

“I just want to thank my father for giving me the opportunity to perform Hajj. And I love him so much because without my father, I might not have been a Muslim,” she said.

A number of Congressmen support Pacquiao but none for SEAG athletes

In the wave of the controversial bout of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, another sports competition is happening on the South East side of the globe. Currently happening in Indonesia is the 26th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG).

But despite the event being an international event, a lot more politicians, especially members of the Philippine Congress showed support for the pound-for-pound king than the 512 Filipino athletes competing in Indonesia.

As reported in the local news, 60 Filipino congressmen were in Las Vegas to watch Pacquiao’s fight wherein Pacquiao even said that they should do a “roll call”, a process done in Congress, since there were a lot of representatives in Vegas. Among the congressmen spotted in Las Vegas were Pangasinan Representative, Gina De Venecia and Manila Representative, Amado Bagatsing.

Meanwhile, not a single congressman has been cheering or showing support for the national athletes. The games is now on its 6th day wherein the Philippines is placing   6th with 14 gold, 22 silver and 28 bronze medals. The most gold medals won by the country was yesterday or Day 5 of the SEAG. The Philippines won a total of 6 models bringing the total gold count to 14.

If the rematch between the two boxers wasn’t controversial enough, the epic fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez held at the MGM Grand Arena ended in a controversial decision.

With the judges’ score of 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112, the fight for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title was crowned the defending champion, Pacquiao victorious over rival Juan Marquez.

Marquez had the upper hand during the middle rounds with his counter punches as it was obvious that Pacquiao was frustrated and can’t get any rhythm throughout most of the rounds. However, Pacquiao was able to give enough power shots may have earned him the title.

“I clearly won the fight,” Pacquiao said in the post-fight interview. “I got hurt a couple of times, but I’m very careful. We have to accept that my opponent is not easy. He is a good fighter and it’s not easy, but I won the fight,” he added.

Pacquiao’s coach, Freddie Roach stated that Marquez clearly had Pacquiao’s number, and said that they will still have to work on figuring out how to fight against counterpunchers. “He fell into that old trap that he did in the first two fights,” Roach said.

But on the other camp, the match was not a convincing win for Marquez. According to him, the match was his third match against Pacquiao wherein he felt that he was robbed. “It’s hard when you are fighting against the fighter and the judges as well,” “I need to sit down with my family and my camp and make a decision about whether to continue in this sport,” he said. “If I drop him, they are going to pick him up and give him the fight again. I don’t know what else I need to do.” Marquez added.

After the results of the fight, Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum expressed his intent of staging another match between Pacquiao and Marquez. “I am bound and determined to find a definitive winner once and for all. If both fighters agree, I’d like to do the rematch in 2012,” he said.

When asked about a 4th bout, Pacquiao said that he is leaving the decision to his promoter while Marquez’ decision still depends on his statement of retiring after fighting Pacquiao.

World’s largest captive crocodile is in the Philippines

Lolong in captivity

Lolong in captivity

A male crocodile, named by Bunawan residents as “Lolong”, has now claimed the title as the world’s largest captive crocodile.

The certification came after an Australian Zoologist, Adam Britton arrived in the small Philippine town of Bunawan in Agusan, an island in Southern Mindanao. The saltwater reptile measured 6.2 meters or 20 feet and 2 inches. However, Lolong’s weight and the size of its girth were not yet measured.

According to Bunawan town council member Apollo Canoy, they are happy they have the largest crocodile in the world.

Canoy added that Britton was also the same expert who measured the former largest captive crocodile, Cassius, a 5.48 meter Australian saltwater crocodile. Cassius currently holds the Guinness record as the largest in captivity.

“So far we have not had any contacts with Guinness, and we do not know whether they plan to visit us soon,” Canoy said, adding that Britton measured the Bunawan crocodile at its pen for a foreign television station.

According to the Guinness website, officials are already checking the validity of the crocodile and verifying the claim that the record was broken.

Lolong, was captured in the Agusan marsh after a 3-week manhunt following an attack that killed two residents and several farm animals. However, no trace of human victims has been found in its gut.
Since in captivity, Lolong has already attracted 27,000 people and drawing an average of 500 visitors a day.

Sarah Geronimo pressured and no longer guarded.

In a recent interview in an entertainment show Pop superstar Sarah Geronimo revealed that her mother no longer watches her as much as before and also admitted that she is pressured with the success of Star Cinema and Viva Film’s “No Other Woman” and “The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin”.

When Geronimo was asked about the reason behind the unusual act by her mother, Geronimo replied “Hindi na, hindi na masyado. Ako nga yung nalulungkot kapag mag-isa lang ako. Busing-busy siya sa mga errands.”

Geronimo is also set to do a movie with Gerald Anderson entitled “Won’t last a day without you” that will be shown starting Nov. 23. The movie follows the box office hits of the two films by Star Cinema and Viva Films. Sarah admitted that she is feeling pressured to deliver the same results as the two movies or more.

“To be honest, yes. Sobra! [But] on a positive note naman, mas nacha-challenge kami na mas pagbutihan pa yung trabaho namin, kami ni Gerald,” she said.

The second Sarah-Gerald movie has Sarah playing the role of radio jock Heidee (real name George Apostol), who dishes out on her radio program some love advice from her own “painful” experiences.
