Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has sought permission from the Pasay City court to attend the wake of her late brother-in-law, Negros Occidental Rep. Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo Jr.
A report by radio dzBB’s Sam Nielsen Thursday said Mrs. Arroyo’s lawyer, Benjamin Santos, submitted a motion to the effect to the Pasay City regional trial court last Wednesday,
The report said Mrs. Arroyo wanted to “pay her respects” to her late brother-in-law, who died last week after a lingering illness.
No date has so far been set for the return of Rep. Arroyo’s remains from London.
But the same radio report said the camp of Mrs. Arroyo’s motion will not be heard until at least on Friday, when the court also hears the motion of the Commission on Elections to transfer the former Philippine leader to a regular jail.
Mrs. Arroyo has been under hospital arrest since Nov. 18, on charges of electoral sabotage.
She is now staying at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City, where she was transferred from the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City last Dec. 9.
The Comelec, however, has asked the court to have Mrs. Arroyo transferred from the VMMC to a regular jail as her condition has improved.
The court had earlier scheduled Mrs. Arroyo’s arraignment on Feb. 20. — RSJ, GMA News
