Efren Peñaflorida is still our Hero

A year had passed when Efren Peñaflorida was awarded as CNN Hero of the Year. New hero will be awarded next month as 2010 CNN Hero of the Year, but for us, Filipinos, he is still our Hero.

He founded the Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) at the age of 16. He started this youth group in his high school to aim at diverting students attention away from street gangs, and towards community activism and personal development. DTC eventually pioneered the idea of the “pushcart classroom” or also known as Kariton Classroom, wherein pushcarts were stocked with school materials such as books, pens, tables, and chairs, and then used on Saturdays to recreate school settings in unconventional locations such as the cemetery or trash dump.

He was so sad when no one wasn’t able to be nominated this year. He also revealed that he also send entry nominations. He just don’t know how CNN judge the nominees even how he made it on the finalist last year. The CNN Hero of the Year is based from online voting.

Indeed, Efren is one of Filipino’s inspirations. I know that he will still continue his advocacy and his project with DTC. But he still hopes that soon another Filipino will be one of the finalist as CNN Hero of the Year.
