Nonito Donaire is all set to defend his WBA superflyweight interim belt against a new and dangerous challenger in Manuel “Chango’’ Vargas of Mexico this Sunday on the action-packed “Pinoy Power 3,’’ to be broadcast live from Las Vegas Hilton, USA on ABS-CBN at 10:30 am.
Vargas replaced fellow Mexican Gerson Guerrero after the latter failed an eye examination three days before the title bout due to a detached retina.
Donaire remains upbeat and confident he will take home his title, one of two world championships at stake in “Pinoy Power 3.’’
“ I just want to fight – bring on anyone,’’ said the “Filipino Flash,’’ who has been training for Guerrero for over two months already.
Widely considered as one of the Philippines’ boxing royalty, Donaire is ready to follow the footsteps of reigning boxing king and compatriot Manny Pacquiao. The US-based fighter has continued to rise in the pound-for-pound rankings ever since his smashing knockout of then flyweight champ Vic Darchinyan in 2007.
Vargas, however, is ready to stand in Donaire’s way. Last year, the Mexican gave current WBO minimum weight champion Donnie Nietes a difficult fight. He almost won the controversial bout, which was scored a split decision in favor of Nietes.
