TUGUEGARAO CITY— Catholic Church leaders in Cagayan vowed to step up their campaign against mining in the province amid the botched transport of magnetite that were suspected to have been extracted in northern Cagayan.
“The stand of the Church is very clear. We are not changing our stand. We are against mining and we will support any [protest] against mining,” Fr. Manuel Catral, Social Action Center director of the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao, said on Sunday.
On January 1, a North Korean vessel, carrying about 2,800 metric tons of iron sand or magnetite bound for China, listed off the coast of Claveria town.
The 22 crewmen of MV Nam Yang 8 abandoned ship and reached the coastal village of Taggat Norte in Claveria aboard a lifeboat.
