Curfew to be enforced in Mayon danger zones

LEGAZPI CITY , Philippines  – The provincial government of Albay has ordered the military and police to impose a curfew starting today to keep residents out of harm’s way in the face of the imminent eruption of Mayon volcano.

Albay Gov. Joey Salceda ordered government troops and the police to force the evacuation of thousands of villagers still within the expaded eight-kilometer danger zone and impose a curfew to prevent them from returning.

Salceda said the Joint Task Force Mayon with the Army’s Col. Marlou Salazar and provincial police director Senior Superintendent William

Macavinta has been authorized to use force to evacuate the remaining villagers and move them to designated evacuation centers.

Salceda also called on the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) to monitor the mandatory evacuation procedures for the remaining residents who had refused to move out, complaining of the loss of their harvest and livelihood.
