Villar-Legarda tandem formalized; no coalition of parties

Loren-Villar tandem

THE EXPECTED tandem of Senator Manuel B. Villar, Jr. of the Nacionalista Party (NP) and Senator Loren B. Legarda of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) was formalized yesterday, both confirming their team-up for the presidential and vice-presidential race in the May 2010 elections.

The coalition was finalized after weeks of discussions between the two parties after the resignation of Senator Francis Joseph “Chiz” G. Escudero from NPC, leaving Ms. Legarda, who has declared her intention to run for the second post, with no standard-bearer. NPC is led by San Miguel Chairman Eduardo “Danding” M. Cojuangco, Jr.

“I have not announced a decision [on my political plans]. I respect the decision of Senator Legarda to join [Mr.] Villar’s NP,” said Mr. Escudero in a text message yesterday.

Mr. Villar described the team-up as a “partnership against poverty and a coalition for sustainable development.”
