MANILA, Philippines – Former Abra governor Vicente Isidro Valera was ordered arrested by a Quezon City regional trial court (RTC) judge for the murder of his political rival and his police escort in front of a church three years ago.
In a one-page order dated Aug. 10, Quezon City RTC Branch 84 Judge Luisito Cortez also ordered the arrest of Valera’s security escort Army Sgt. Leo Bello and aide Jerry Turqueza.
Cortez recommended no bail be granted to Valera, Bello and Turqueza.
Police said they have witnesses testifying that Valera, Bello and Turqueza were involved in the assassination of Abra Rep. Luis “Chito” Bersamin in front of the Mt. Carmel church in Quezon City on Dec. 16, 2006.
His police escort, SPO1 Adelfo Ortega, was also killed in the process.
