20 Abu Sayyaf, 22 soldiers dead in Basilan

ZAMBOANGA CITY – (UPDATE) At least 42 combatants, 22 of them government troopers, were killed in heavy clashes in Basilan province on Wednesday.

Commodore Alex Pama, commander of the Naval Forces in Western Mindanao, said 20 of those killed were Abu Sayyaf bandits.

The clashes started when government troops launched an offensive against Abu Sayyaf bandits under Puruji Indama in Silangkom village in Tipo-tipo central town on Wednesday dawn, according to Brig. Gen. Rustico Guerrero, commander of the First Marine Brigade.
