SC protects Gadian, grants amparo writ

In an unprecedented move, the Supreme Court (SC), under the authority of Chief Justice Reynato Puno, issued yesterday a writ of amparo ordering the top officials of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to halt their arrest order against a junior officer and for them to desist from issuing or carrying out any threat to the life, liberty and security of Navy whistle-blower Lt. S/G Nancy Gadian.

The military earlier had given Gadian 48 hours to surrender. There were also reported shoot to kill orders from the military brass once she is declared a “deserter.”

This is the first time the SC has provided protection under the writ of amparo to an officer of the AFP.
