It wouldn’t be entirely misleading to claim that our favorite small municipality of Liliw in Laguna is the town that the tsinelas built. The reputation of its slippers and sandals are known all over the country as products from Liliw have penetrated shoe stores in Manila, where they are often given a different label.
No one remembers exactly how this town of barely 30, 000 inhabitants began the tsinelas industry. It did start in the 1940s and third generation family members have continued the trade. It is no secret that their forebears made their fortunes and have managed to build palatial homes from the sweat of making tsinelas.
