Myths on schizophrenia

People who suffer from schizophre-nia aren’t the only ones confounded by their condition. Their friends and the public are also baffled about the patient’s state of mind. Over half of schizophrenics suffer from social stigma all because only a few people understand the illness and what actually causes it.
Every year, more than 300,000 people are diagnosed with schizophrenia, a severe mental illness described by the American Psychiatric Association as “one of the most debilitating and baffling mental illnesses known.” It’s characterized by a dysfunction of the thinking process, such as hallucinations and delusions, and withdrawal from the outside world. Research has shown that schizophrenia is a biologically based brain diseases with schizophrenics having elevated levels of dopamine and serotonin activity.
