Few takers for duty-free cement imports

Traders have refused to bite the government’s duty-free cement importation policy saying the estimated margin is not attractive enough and importing cement is too risky because local cement manufacturers have the capability to engage in predatory pricing.

A known cement trader said in an interview that margin and the high risk involved in the importation of cement are the main reasons why there has been no single cement importation since the government lifted the 3 to 5 percent tariff on this commodity in November last year.
