Ransom up for teachers’ release

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Gunmen who seized three teachers from an island village in Zamboanga Sibugay have already demanded ransom in exchange for the hostages’ release, an official said.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno announced that the kidnappers have raised the ransom demand Tuesday, four days after the abduction of Jocelyn Enriquez, Jocelyn Inion and Noime Mandi.

Puno, however, refused to say how much ransom the kidnappers demanded.

Enriquez, Inion and Mandi are all public school teachers assigned at Bangkaw-Bangkaw Elementary School in Zamboanga Sibugay province. They were snatched by gunmen last March 13 while traveling from Bangkaw Bangkaw island to Naga town proper.

Puno said they will stand by the government’s “no-ransom policy” in securing the release of the three teachers.
