MMDA wants more cops during demolitions

MANILA, Philippines – Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairman Bayani Fernando said yesterday he wants more uniformed policemen to protect MMDA- Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group (SCOG) personnel while they are demolishing illegally built structures, particularly shanties.

“Many of our people are either stabbed or shot at. It would be better if more policemen would be there to secure them,” Fernando said.

MMDA records show that since 2003, five employees have been killed during road and sidewalk clearing operations.
