‘I.M. as Pinoy as texting’ — Chikka.com


THE USE of I.M, or “Instant Messaging,” the counterpart of text messaging in the online world is also very popular among Filipinos. “In Manila alone, 50% of people online are using some kind of an instant messenger — higher than many of their counterparts in other Asian capitals,” said Chito Bustamante, CEO of Chikka.com, quoting a Synovate PAX Survey.

An instant messenger allows online users to chat in real time with other users, normally friends whom they have accepted and saved in a contact list. Like text messaging, IM chat has the apparent benefits of being a more tactful and less obtrusive medium when compared to other modes of communications; only, like many of the other popular services on the Internet, it is free.
