UNICEF: RP has no excuse not to meet poverty-reduction goals

In an interview with BusinessWorld, Vanessa Tobin said the country may be lacking in the goals for universal primary education and maternal health, but “there are no excuses for the Philippines not to meet the MDG targets because there have been considerable gains made in many targets.”

The Philippines is said to be on track in meeting the goals except for two items: universal primary education and improving maternal health.

The other goals are improving extreme poverty and hunger; promoting gender equality and empowering women; reducing child mortality; combating HIV/AID (human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome), malaria and other diseases; ensuring environmental sustainability; and developing a global partnership for development.
