MARTIAL Law did not only change the lives of many Filipinos in the early 1970s, but also the time to observe the pre-dawn masses or “Simbang Gabi.”
According to Fr. Genaro Diwa of the Ministry for Liturgical Affairs of the archdiocese of Manila, the changes in the time began during the Martial Law because of the curfew.
Before Martial Law was declared by former President Ferdinand Marcos, he noted that the Simbang Gabi mass was celebrated only at 4 a.m. but after September 1972, masses were also celebrated at 5 a.m. onwards. [Continue Reading...]
